Waverly is a city in Lafayette County, Missouri, and part of the Kansas City metropolitan area within the United States. As of the 2020 census, Waverly had a population of 784.

Waverly is the location of Baltimore Bend Winery, one of the many small wineries established in the state since the 1960s. The Waverly Bridge over the Missouri River is located near here.

It is also home to General Jo Shelby, a hemp farmer who joined the Confederate cause in 1861.

History

Waverly was founded in the 1840s. The community was named after Waverly, Illinois, the native home of an early settler. A post office called Waverly has been in operation since 1854.

The Napoleon Buck House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Demographics

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 849 people, 317 households, and 215 families living in the city. The population density was . There were 362 housing units at an average density of . The racial makeup of the city was 94.5% White, 2.1% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 2.1% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.1% of the population.

There were 317 households, of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.01.

The median age in the city was 40.6 years. 28.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 21.6% were from 25 to 44; 26.2% were from 45 to 64; and 18.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.6% male and 48.4% female.

2000 census

Waverly has a public library, a branch of the Trails Regional Library.

Metropolitan Community College has the Santa Fe school district area in its service area, but not its in-district taxation area.
