Sylvester is the county seat of Worth County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,644 in 2020. The city is the county seat and business center of Worth County and is claimed to be the Peanut Capital of the World due to its peanut production. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Sylvester as a town in 1898.
Geography
Sylvester is located at (31.531425, -83.836233). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and (0.52%) is water.
Sylvester is located on 15px U.S. Highway 82 at the junction of 15px Georgia State Route 33. 15pxGeorgia State Route 256 enters into southeast Sylvester, where it is co-designated Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Demographics
2020 census
As of the 2020 census, Sylvester had a population of 5,644. The median age was 37.3 years. 25.7% of residents were under the age of 18 and 17.7% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 79.3 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 75.9 males age 18 and over.
95.8% of residents lived in urban areas, while 4.2% lived in rural areas.
There were 2,182 households in Sylvester, of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 30.5% were married-couple households, 17.2% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 45.7% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 30.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 1,709 families residing in the city. The district has 296 full-time teachers and over 4,354 students.
