Sebeka ( ) is a city in Wadena County, Minnesota, United States. As of the 2020 census, Sebeka had a population of 741. The name comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "town by the water".

U.S. Highway 71, State Highway 227, and the historic Jefferson Highway (now Jefferson Avenue), are three of the main routes in the city.

History

Sebeka originally grew around the depot of the K-line branch of the Great Northern Railway, which first came through the area in 1892. The town was incorporated on March 19, 1898. Its population has gone from 233 in 1900 to a peak of 818 in 1960. Murals were produced from 1934 to 1943 in the United States through the Section of Painting and Sculpture, later called the Section of Fine Arts, of the Treasury Department.

Demographics

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 711 people, 321 households, and 182 families residing in the city. The population density was . There were 364 housing units at an average density of . The racial makeup of the city was 97.9% White, 0.4% African American, 0.1% Native American, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.

There were 321 households, of which 27.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.5% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.3% were non-families. 38.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.96.

The median age in the city was 38.3 years. 26.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.3% were from 25 to 44; 23.1% were from 45 to 64; and 20.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.8% male and 52.2% female.
