Nottawa Township is a civil township of St. Joseph County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,685 at the 2020 census. The township is named after the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi.

History

Nottawa Township was the center of the Notawasepe Potawatamie Reservation which was the home of the ancestors of the Nottawasippi Potawatamies starting in 1821.

Communities

  • Centreville is a village on the western edge of the township, partially within adjacent Lockport Township.
  • Nottawa is an unincorporated community in the southwest of the township on M-86, about two miles west of M-66 and four miles east of Centreville.
  • Wasepi is an unincorporated community near the center of the township.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 37.6 square miles (97.4 km), of which 35.8 square miles (92.7 km) is land and 1.8 square miles (4.7 km) (4.81%) is water.
