The racial makeup of the town was 98.26% White, 0.33% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.25% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.
There were 1,163 households, out of which 25.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.85. It was first settled around 1762 as a fishing retreat for Sir William Johnson. The Godfrey Shew House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
