Mount Vernon is a city in Grant County, Oregon, United States. Its post office was established in 1877 and named after a black stallion that belonged to settler David W. Jenkins. The stallion's stable, a small stone building, is still standing in a field on the north side of U.S. Highway 26 about east of the main intersection in town. In 1915 the ranching community had a population of 60 and a hotel at a hot springs resort approximately north. The population had grown to 451 by the 1950 census. As of the 2020 census, Mount Vernon had a population of 548.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. It is located along U.S. Route 26 on the John Day River about west of the city of John Day.

As of the 2020 census, Mount Vernon had a population of 548. The median age was 50.3 years. 19.2% of residents were under the age of 18 and 27.7% of residents were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 94.3 males age 18 and over.

There were 247 households in Mount Vernon, of which 21.9% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 44.1% were married-couple households, 19.8% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 29.1% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 35.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

As of the census of 2010, there were 527 people, 259 households, and 151 families residing in the city. The population density was . There were 281 housing units at an average density of . The racial makeup of the city was 95.4% White, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 1.7% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.0% of the population.

There were 259 households, of which 21.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.4% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.7% were non-families. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.03 and the average family size was 2.61.
