John Means is a former community college English instructor from Mason City, Illinois, who had gained fame in the 1980s as a stand-up comedian. Based out of San Francisco, he performed under the stage name "Dr. Gonzo." His father was Dr. Jack Means.

Means graduated from Mason City High School. He attended Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois and transferred to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 1977.

Career

In 1978, Means moved to San Francisco. In 1987, he was a contestant on Star Search.

His most successful collaboration was with famed 1980s rock group, Huey Lewis and the News. He devotes his spare time to beautification projects in his hometown.
