Fairfax is a town in southeastern Gregory County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 96 at the 2020 census.
History
The first settlement at Fairfax was made around 1890. A post office called Fairfax has been in operation since 1892. It was named after Fairfax, Virginia, the former hometown of an early settler.

At the 2010 census, there were 115 people, 63 households and 33 families residing in the town. The population density was . There were 81 housing units at an average density of . The racial makeup of the town was 97.4% White, 1.7% African American, and 0.9% Native American.
There were 63 households, of which 17.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.3% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 47.6% were non-families. 44.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 22.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.83 and the average family size was 2.52.
