Dupree is a city in and county seat of Ziebach County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 494 at the 2020 census. It is the only incorporated community located fully within Ziebach County.

History

Dupree got its start in 1910, following construction of the Milwaukee Railroad through the territory. The city derives its name from Fred Dupris, a pioneer settler.

As of the 2020 census, Dupree had a population of 494. The median age was 31.3 years, with 31.2% of residents under the age of 18 and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 98.8 males age 18 and over.

There were 158 households in Dupree, of which 46.8% had children under the age of 18 living in them. Of all households, 28.5% were married-couple households, 23.4% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 34.8% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 29.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

As of the census of 2010, there were 525 people, 176 households, and 116 families residing in the city. The population density was . There were 203 housing units at an average density of . The racial makeup of the city was 29.3% White, 66.9% Native American, 0.4% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.

There were 176 households, of which 44.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.1% were married couples living together, 21.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 34.1% were non-families. 31.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.83.

The median age in the city was 27.6 years. 37.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22% were from 25 to 44; 23.8% were from 45 to 64; and 7.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 46.5% male and 53.5% female.
